Methanol vs. Ethanol: An Overview

In smaller quantities, it may relax the mind and allow some individuals to participate more easily in otherwise stressful social situations. Today, upward of 98 percent of gasoline sold in the U.S. contains some amount of ethanol. The most common ratio is 90 percent gasoline (another hydrocarbon, if you’re keeping score) to 10 percent ethanol.

This is because non-ethanol, or lower concentrations of ethanol, may not be as effective in killing as many different types of microbes. For the production of some compounds, ethyl alcohol is an essential reactant; for example, ester formation, polymer production, etc. requires ethyl alcohol as a reactant. The most common chemical reactions of ethyl alcohol include dehydration, halogenation, combustion and oxidation.

Both alcohols are effective at killing germs when used in concentrations over 60 percent, but there’s some evidence that ethyl alcohol is less damaging to your skin. It is used as a major component in manufacturing alcoholic beverages. Ethyl alcohol is a widely used solvent for substances like paints.

Alcohols also participate in nucleophilic substitution reactions, where another functional group replaces the hydroxyl group. This versatility makes them important intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, perfumes, and other valuable chemicals. Ethanol-water mixtures have less volume than the sum of their individual components at the given fractions. Mixing equal volumes of ethanol and water results in only 1.92 volumes of mixture.[73][78] Mixing ethanol and water is exothermic, with up to 777 J/mol[79] being released at 298 K. Ethanol is found in paints, tinctures, markers, and personal care products such as mouthwashes, perfumes and deodorants.

As the wine’s ethanol content decreases, its surface tension increases and the thin film “beads up” and runs down the glass in channels rather than as a smooth sheet. For the same reason, it is also used as the active fluid in alcohol thermometers. You can recognize that a chemical is an alcohol if it has the “-ol” ending. Other alcohols may have names starting with a hydroxy- prefix. “Hydroxy” appears in a name if there is a higher priority functional group in the molecule.

Like other types of alcohol, it readily absorbs through skin. But, methanol is dangerously toxic and can cause nervous system and organ damage. Isopropyl alcohol is used as rubbing alcohol and occurs in some hand sanitizer products. It quickly evaporates from skin, producing a cooling sensation. Isopropyl alcohol is not as toxic as methanol, so it’s approved for use on skin.

The other reason, of course, is that some manufacturers intentionally used the chemical. The hydrogen atoms are slightly positive because the bonding electrons are pulled toward the very electronegative oxygen atoms. In alkanes, the only intermolecular forces are van der Waals dispersion forces.

The largest single use of ethanol is as an engine fuel and fuel additive. Hydrous ethanol (about 95% ethanol and 5% water) can be used as fuel in more than 90% of new gasoline-fueled cars sold in the country. Similarly, professional testers observe a stronger “ethanol-like” taste in beer after it has been chilled.

If a little alcohol is good at killing germs, isn’t more better? Why stop at 65 or 70 percent alcohol when you can go all the way to 100 percent? Because it turns out 100 percent alcohol is actually less effective at dealing death to those dastardly diseases. The exact mechanism of isopropyl alcohol’s ability to break down germs isn’t dangers of detoxing from alcohol at home known, but it’s thought to break down proteins and the DNA that viruses, bacteria, and other germs need to survive. Direct distillation can yield at best the constant-boiling-point mixture containing 95.6 percent by weight of ethanol.
